A wide-ranging look at the fascinatingly diverse syncretic melange of religion in Java. Inevitably the most interesting part to me was at the beginning, about the "folk" religion Geertz calls the abangan strain.

Later chapters on the santri , more self-consciously Muslim, strain which is as much about political party organization as religious practice and prijaji , aristocratic mystic tradition which gets into linguistic levels of politeness, interestingly similar to Japanese which I speak some A wide-ranging look at the fascinatingly diverse syncretic melange of religion in Java. Plenty to ponder. Now I want one about Bali, which maybe will have less of the strangeness of culture heroes who brought Islam as well as the wayang and batik dyeing to Java, but perhaps therefore more of the so-called 'folk religion' which I find so satisfying and interesting. Feb 19, Kathleen rated it it was amazing. First book I read on Indonesia as an undergraduate student Buku ini menarik, tetapi bahasanya cukup sulit dicerna.

Still a great reference for a deconstruction of Javanese society and how much has or has not changed in 65 years. The grouping of peasant abangan , religious urban merchant class santri, and urban aristocrats priyayi may seem simplistic. But Clifford Geertz, in several places throughout the book, provided a caveat that the interactions and conflicts among and within the three groups were quite dynamic.

In addition, recent research also shows this I reread this book after a couple of decades. In addition, recent research also shows this division is largely universal in other societies. What is interesting for me is to read this book against today's political development in Indonesia, esp.

First, the santri group has become more diversified and strong at the same time. The traditional division between conservative NU and modern and progressive Muhammadiyah has seen competition from new and more politically militant groups in the past 30 years, among others from the Justice and Welfare Party PKS. These new strands of santri are making headway at the expense of the abangan group, especially since the abangan group is becoming more urban and exposed to modern but more fundamental Islamic movements.

And the political battleground is increasingly fought on the basis of these identities. What kind of Indonesians are we? And if we're Moslem, what kind of Moslem? It's easy to be skeptical and think that the Islamists are making rapid strides. But these movements are also very diversified across different shades of ideology.
